What is the deal with coffee?
A cup of coffee is often necessary to clear the drowsy fog that hovers over us in the morning but is it a good way to start our morning?
Like many things in life there are negative and positive sides to everything, including coffee. If you feel the need to have the jolt of caffeine in the morning, 3-5 eight ounce cups is completely safe to enjoy. The only thing is, with every 1 cup of your coffee you consume, match it with two cups of water. Coffee is dehydrating and especially after a night’s rest, replacing the water in your body is extremely important.
Research has shown coffee can increase exercise effectiveness in the gym. The caffeine in coffee can work as a pre-workout energy booster so if you find yourself wanting to workout but too tired to do so, maybe a cup of coffee will give you the push you need (just remember to also hydrate). Coffee can also increase productivity and alertness; if you have a morning meeting with important bosses– coffee might be the saving grace. Coffee may also help with prevention of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, gout and constipation.
With the positive effects also come the negatives of coffee consumption. Overloading on coffee may lead to a shaky and jittery feeling. Drinking coffee especially when combined with not drinking water may lead to headaches. Some people experience the “afternoon crash” which can be caused by the caffeine wearing off, creating a feeling of exhaustion in mid-afternoon. Coffee has also been linked to IBS symptoms, heartburn and some cancers. The dehydrating effects of coffee consumption leads to a higher frequency of urination in some individuals.
If you are someone who experiences the negative side effects of coffee avoidance may be the cure to deter them. Although, if coffee has a positive effect on your body, there is no reason to avoid it within reason. 3-5 eight ounce cups day, when combined with hydration is a great way to boost your alertness, get ready to hit the gym routine hard or to even sit with and chat with a friend catching up on the happenings of life.
